As an electrician, you’ll already know how important it is to stay on top of the latest laws and regulations. That’s easier said than done, though – they’re not always the easiest things to get your head around! This is certainly the case when it comes to Lot 20, the new European heating laws that all tradespeople need to know about. Whether you’re a builder, electrician, or a general trade, we’ll break down what Lot 20 means for you in this no-nonsense guide.
What is Lot 20?
For a detailed explanation of what Lot 20 is and how it works, check our complete Lot 20 guide here. The shorter explanation is that it’s a new set of laws that means every electric heater must meet a high standard of energy efficiency for it to be sold in the UK. It’s worked out using a points system – the more eco-friendly features a heater has, the more points it scores. Wall-mountable panel heaters – the ones you’ll be dealing with – need to score at least 38 points to qualify for an EcoDesign Lot 20 certificate.
What to Watch Out For
Sounds fairly simple so far. However, there’s a loophole you need to be aware of. Heaters manufactured before 1st January 2018 (the date Lot 20 laws came into effect) can still be sold. This means you can pick up this old, less energy-efficient stock relatively cheaply. Now, you aren’t legally obliged to fit non-compliant heaters on any job. Bear in mind, though, that landlords, property developers, and other likely clients of yours are bound by Lot 20 laws even if they’re not aware of them! Don’t risk it for the sake of picking up a cheap heater, as your clients won’t be best pleased if they fall foul of the law!
EPC and MEES Laws
Landlords are required by law to ensure their properties meet new minimum energy efficiency targets before 1st April 2020. This is due to EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) laws and MEES (Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards) regulations. These laws have actually been in place for a few years now, but are being tightened up in 2020. Landlords must upgrade their properties’ heating to an E grade or above, and electric heaters are an easy and affordable way to do that. Remember this when you’re speccing for a job, especially if your client isn’t fully aware of what Lot 20 is all about.
What Does Lot 20 Mean for Me?
It sounds like a lot of headaches, but it’s easy to turn Lot 20 to your advantage. If you have any older customers on file who’s heating might not be up to scratch, you could always reach out and check – there might be some work in it for you. It’s a great opportunity to get one step ahead of your competition while you can. If you don’t, it won’t be long before you’re the one being left behind.
